Tiara is planning to premiere the 56 LS at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2025.

Tiara Yachts in Holland, Michigan, is planning for the debut of its 56 LS at the Miami International Boat Show that’s scheduled to take place February 12-16, 2025.

The Tiara 56 LS is the largest, most ambitious of Tiara’s outboard models to date—the brand’s first quad-outboard model, with four 600-horsepower Mercury Verado V-12 engines. Top speed, according to Tiara, will be about 50 knots, also making the 56 LS one of the fastest boats that Tiara has ever built.

The 56 LS’s cockpit has a galley overlooking the cockpit, where two module options—for entertaining or fishing—are available. Courtesy Tiara Yachts

“The Luxury Sport formula has been a successful one for Tiara, elevating the day yachting experience with versatile social zones and luxurious amenities. The 56 LS builds upon that foundation. Everything is amplified on this boat,” Tiara Yachts CEO Tom Slikkers stated in a press release. “I’m confident our customers are going to be just as excited as we are about this addition to our portfolio.”

Exterior spaces on the 56 LS include a galley overlooking the cockpit, where two module options—for entertaining or fishing—are available as the owner’s choice. Port and starboard hullside terraces expand the beam by more than 6 feet. At the helm, the integrated electronics package includes Garmin systems.

Belowdecks, two staterooms and two heads can sleep five people for overnight or extended stays.

“Our LS line has been a favorite of our customers, and we’re eager to showcase this new addition to our portfolio,” Andrew Bartlett, director of design at Tiara, stated in the press release. “Our customers will find multiple features on board that allow them to enjoy the water, entertain family and friends, and comfortably stay overnight. As outboard models continue to have a resurgence in the boating industry, we’re excited to introduce another Tiara to the market.”

How many other models are in Tiara’s Luxury Sport line? The 56 is the fifth. The four other LS models range from 34 to 48 feet length overall. The Luxury Sport line is one of four series the builder offers. The other three are the LX, LE and EX.

Unveiling the Tiara Yachts EX 54: A Comprehensive Review https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/tiara-yachts-ex-54-reviewed/ Fri, 30 Aug 2024 19:00:18 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=65890 The Tiara Yachts EX 54 features modular seating, advanced tech and a versatile design for cruising, fishing or entertaining.

Tiara Yachts entered new territory with its EX 60 last year, and its EX 54 follows that same magic in a smaller package. Like the EX 60, the EX 54 has modular seating in the cockpit, allowing each owner to tailor the yacht to a specific mission.

My educated guess says that the Lounge module will be the most popular, with a pair of settees facing across a folding teak table. Not only does this setup make for great alfresco entertaining, but the aft settee also incorporates a sink, grill, fridge and optional ice maker across the transom.

The Adventure module has fishing written all over it, replacing the aft settee with more foot space and a console with five rod holders, tackle lockers, a cutting board and a sink.

The last module is the Glass Patio, which replaces the backrest of the aft settee with a laminated glass bulkhead so guests (and parents) can keep an eye on the watery action off the stern. I’d recommend the optional hydraulic platform (a 5-foot platform is standard) with steps descending into the water and built-in chocks to stow a tender. All the cockpit modules raise electrically to reveal a garage for water toys and gear.

Like many powerboats these days, the Tiara EX 54 has foldout hullsides to create extended cockpit space, but Tiara goes further with flush-mounted boarding doors on each side. This design makes for easy step-aboard access while leaving nothing to stub toes with the sides folded down.

Forward of the seating modules and up two steps on the mezzanine level is an aft-facing table with twin hassocks (with stowage). Forward of that and to port, with an electrically disappearing window, a pair of stools create a salon-facing bar. The adjacent two-panel sliding doors can open the salon entirely to the cockpit.

In the salon, which has a Herculan teak sole, a convertible dinette to port forms a berth by lowering the high-gloss teak table. (It’s the same size as the one on the EX 60.) The galley is fitted out for cruising, with a two-burner Kenyon induction cooktop, cookware, a microwave/convection oven, a two-drawer fridge and a stainless-steel sink. Behind the galley countertop is a pop-up 43-inch TV that faces the lounge. The absence of overhead cabinets makes for a panoramic view, with stowage in drawers and lockers.

Foldout side decks are standard. Cockpit module options enable angling, entertaining and more. Courtesy Tiara Yachts

Just forward, the skipper can use the sliding pilothouse door for easy side-deck access. This, along with a clever outboard sliding armrest on the Stidd double-wide helm seat, lets the skipper stand on the side deck and use the Volvo Penta joystick for docking. Overhead is a Webasto electric sunroof.

The dash is fitted with Volvo Penta’s Glass Cockpit, including two 22-inch Garmin GPSMap 8622 displays and a row of backlit buttons for systems. The equipment includes a Garmin autopilot, Fantom 54 radar, VHF radio and aft-facing cockpit camera.

Opposite the helm is a double-wide companion seat that, at the push of a button, slides aft so everyone can join in the action while running to the next waypoint. The seat also slides forward to create a U-shaped dinette. That companion seat has a console with an optional Garmin GPSMap 8622.

Tiara Yachts EX 54
The full-beam owner’s stateroom has 6-foot-5-inch headroom. A settee is available in lieu of the bureau. Courtesy Tiara Yachts

Step down into the airy, bright atrium from salon level, and a door leads forward from the foyer to the VIP stateroom with a walk-around island queen berth. It lifts to reveal lighted stowage for suitcases. A door allows private access to the guest head—also off the foyer—with a VacuFlush head and stall shower. Across the foyer is a second stateroom, ideally for kids, with bunk berths.

The full-beam owner’s stateroom is aft with 6-foot-5-inch headroom and a queen-size pedestal berth. The EX 54 that I got aboard had the full bureau to starboard. (A settee is optional.) The space had 23 drawers for extended cruising, plus a cedar-lined hanging locker like the ones in the other staterooms. A GE washer-dryer was tucked away in the passageway to this stateroom, and the private head included a Lacava vessel sink, stowage and a stall shower.

Going forward on deck is made secure by solid coamings capped by stainless-steel rails. The bow area has a multiuse lounge with sun pads and a removable table. The all-chain windlass is tucked under a hatch, with a wired remote as well as helm controls. I liked the two walkways on each side of the windlass locker, allowing deck crew to look down securely on the anchor.

Tiara Yachts EX 54
The Tiara EX 54’s bridge deck can be closed up and climate-controlled or fully open for sun and breezes. Courtesy Tiara Yachts

Power for the EX 54 is twin Volvo Penta IPS2 950 diesels paired to pod drives, and the engine room is clearly arranged for service techs or hands-on owners. A five-step ladder leads down from the cockpit, and everything from the oil changers and seacocks to the 13.5 kW Onan genset is readily accessible.

Underway, the EX 54 is pure fun. We started our runs in smooth water on the Intracoastal Waterway, where I checked a 33.7-knot top speed and indulged in some doughnuts and swoops. I recorded just 70 decibels at full throttle with the sunroof open, making conversation easy. Once offshore, the yacht’s fine entry and 14-degree transom deadrise handled the lumpy Gulf Stream, throwing spray far to the side and providing a smooth, predictable, stable ride. I didn’t need handrails, but I did take note that Tiara has provided a plethora of them, often neatly concealed (next to the forward sun pad, for example).

Whether for entertaining, cruising with friends, fishing or simply enjoying the water, the Tiara Yachts EX 54 can be tailored to fit many owners’ ideas of fun.

Pod Power

This second-generation Volvo Penta diesel IPS2 950 pod-drive system punches out 750 hp, driving through a 1.7:1 gearbox with a jack shaft that allows the engines to sit closer to the center of the yacht. With Volvo’s P4 props, cruise speed was 26 knots for a range of about 300 nautical miles.

Built To Take It

The EX 54 has a no-wood hull. The yacht’s hull, deck and topsides are backed by closed-cell foam coring that provides strength as well as soundproofing. A fiberglass grid supports the engines and interior, adding strength and rigidity.

Garmin Glass Cockpit

Optimized for use with Volvo Penta power, this user-friendly interface combines navigation (a chart plotter, GPS, sonar and radar) with operations (engine data and multitouch systems screens). Preloaded with BlueChart G3 coastal charts, it provides detail to 1 foot with contours for fishing, as well as depth shading and shallow-water warnings.

Express cruisers offer boaters the benefits of sporty performance, sleek profiles and entertainment-focused layouts. From dayboating excursions to weekend and longer cruising, these vessels are true multi-taskers. To help boat buyers who are seeking pre-owned express cruisers, we go in-depth on 10 midsize yachts that are ready for new owners today.

Tiara Yachts Coupe 53
Tiara’s 53 Coupe has low-hour IPS propulsion, 34-knot speed and three staterooms. Asking price: $1.349 million. Courtesy Galati Yacht Sales

2017 Tiara Yachts 53 Coupe – Newport Beach, California

“This Tiara Yachts 53 Coupe express cruiser is a head-turner at the docks with sporty lines accented by a raked windshield and a piercing Navy Blue hull.” Galati Yacht Sales has this California-based Tiara C53 listed at $1.349 million.

“The yacht’s split-level bridge deck is nearly as bright as the outdoors, with a white-accented color palette, teak soles, windows from the ceiling-to-settee level, an electric sunroof and butterfly sliding glass doors aft. Bamboo White Chilewich wall coverings throughout, not only warm the interior, but also create an inviting textured effect.”

Azimut Yachts Atlantis 51
The Azimut Yachts Atlantis 51 has a 35-knot top hop and a Bahamas-friendly 4-foot, 3-inch draft. Courtesy MarineMax

2020 Azimut Atlantis 51 – Utopia – Lewisville, Texas

“Azimut Yachts’ Atlantis 51 is an express cruiser aimed at families looking for a vessel with home-like cruising comfort, multiple entertainment spaces and admirable performance. MarineMax currently has Utopia, a 2020 Azimut Atlantis 51, listed for $1.199 million, which represents a $100,000 price reduction.

Utopia’s sleek lines are accented by a raked windshield, which is accented further by elongated and tinted hullside windows that visually lower the yacht’s profile.

A shallow 4-foot, 3-inch draft makes the 53-footer beach- and sandbar-accessible, while twin low-hour (191) 600 hp Volvo Penta D8 diesels push Utopia to a reported 35-knot top hop and a 32-knot cruise speed. It’s also outfitted with a Seakeeper NG6 gyrostabilizer to make the ride as stable as a table.”

Sunseeker Predator 68
The three-stateroom Sunseeker Predator 68 Gravitas has 38-knot speed, new engines and is asking $2.195 million. Courtesy Allied Marine

2018 Sunseeker Predator 68 – Gravitas – Miami, Florida

“It’s not every day that prospective owners have the chance to purchase a zero-hour used yacht, but that’s exactly what’s available with Gravitas, a 2018 Sunseeker Predator 68.  The supersize express cruiser is listed with Allied Marine for $2.195 million; however, the 68-footer has two brand-new 1,200 hp MAN diesels with a full engine warranty from the manufacturer.

A powerful combination of design elements come together in the Predator 68 with stylish, sleek lines, 38-knot performance and a variety of onboard entertainment spaces–inside and outside.

Done with your morning swim and looking to catch some sun? Take your pick between the foredeck sun pad or the cockpit sun pad. The cockpit has alfresco dining space for everyone aboard at a U-shaped settee and fixed folding table. The grill makes serving the aft dining space a breeze.”

Zeelander Z55
Twin 900 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200 diesels give the Zeelander Z55 Fancy a reported top hop of 38 knots. Cruise speed: 32 knots. Courtesy Atlantic Yacht & Ship

2016 Zeelander Z55 – Fancy – Dania Beach, Florida

This Dutch-built Zeelander Z55 listed with Atlantic Yacht and Ship at an asking price of $1.745 million looks like a little ship. From its proud bow to its robust, heavy-duty hardware, this express cruiser seems ready to roam.

And roam it can. Power is a pair of 900 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200 diesels that reportedly gives this 55-footer a 32-knot cruise speed and a 38-knot top hop.

Fancy, as this Z55 is called, is all about connecting guests on board to sea and each other. Nearly 360 degrees of glass create a constant connection to the sea, bring in light to the salon and helm and provide unobstructed sightlines for the skipper. Need more natural light? There is a retractable sunroof over the helm and dinette.

2021 Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin
This 2021 Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin has a fine entry, indoor-outdoor living and an all-weather pilothouse. Asking price: $369,500. Courtesy Jeff Brown Yachts

2021 Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin – Coronado, California

“The Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin is fast, fun, adventurous and capable. Listed with Jeff Brown Yachts, the asking price is $369,500.

With a reported top-end speed of 47 knots, the Axopar XC Cross Cabin is a fast and responsive vessel. Powered by twin 300 hp Mercury V8 outboards, this boat turns heads as it dices a seaway. Cruising speed is about 31 knots. Dial it back to 3,500 rpms and roughly 28 knots, and range is about 280 nautical miles.

Open the pilothouse’s sliding doors, sunroof and Gullwing doors and guests can enjoy an open- air environment while blazing across the water. Relax on the foredeck sun pads, or in fold-down cushioned seats on the roomy aft deck. As guests take a swim, enjoy a few drinks from the wet bar. Shower off on the aft deck before heading in for a short lunch break to cool off.

Riva 56' SportRiva
The 34-knot Riva 56′ SportRiva has an express cruiser profile with the benefits of a flybridge. Courtesy Atlantic Yacht & Ship

2012 Riva 56’ SportRiva – Gabriela – North Miami, Florida

“The Riva 56′ SportRiva is a yacht where Italian elegance and luxury meets innovative design. The focus of the 56′ SportRiva’s design is on the huge curved windscreen glass,” Yachting previously reported. “The windscreen panels extend across and up and over the lower helm and what looks like a secondary windscreen above is purely a contrasting decorative panel. The flybridge has its own prominent reverse-angle windscreen that challenges the flowing lines and adds a hint of aggression to the style but you reap the benefits of this screen out at sea when traveling at speed.”

Now step aboard Gabriela, a 2012 Riva 56′ SportRiva.

Pershing 62
The Pershing 62 Behike has chic lines, 45-knot speed and a contemporary interior. Courtesy Gilman Yachts

2018 Pershing 62 – Behike – Fort Lauderdale, Florida

“Gilman Yachts currently has Behike, a Pershing 62, listed for sale with an asking price of $1.75 million. This 2018 hardtop express cruiser is known for its combination of luxurious appointments and 45-knot speed.

“As for cruising, hold onto your hats. Like all Pershing yachts, the 62 goes like the ballistic missile that is her namesake,” Yachting previously reported. “Her standard pair of 1,550 hp MAN diesels mated to Arneson ASD 14 surface-piercing drives propelled the 62 to a 45-knot top end and a fast cruise of 36-plus knots, according to Pershing. At these speeds, those MANs would burn well over 100 gph, but hey, one has to put 3,100 horses to work occasionally, right?””

Sea Ray Sundancer 60
The Sea Ray Sundancer 60 Three Sons has a three-stateroom layout and a 34-knot-plus top hop. Asking price: $769,999. Courtesy Atlantic Yacht & Ship

2008 Sea Ray Sundancer 60 – Three Sons – Washburn, Wisconsin

Three Sons, a Sea Ray Sundancer 60, is listed for sale with Atlantic Yacht & Ship and has an asking price of $769,999. The 2008, 34-knot-plus express cruiser has cruising accommodations for six within its three-stateroom layout.

Three Sons is powered by twin 1,100 hp MAN V-10 diesels, which is the same propulsion setup Yachting experienced during our initial sea trial of the Sea Ray Sundancer 60.

“With the luck of the draw, winds and seas were such that running offshore would have been at best unpleasant. Even the Intracoastal Waterway was stirred up, but the 60 had no problem slicing through the chop,” Yachting previously reported. “Her two 1,100 hp electronically controlled, common-rail MAN diesels reached maximum turns in approximately 30 seconds without hesitation and I recorded a maximum speed of 34.8 knots.”

Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht
The Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht Optimist is for sale. It sleeps seven, has alfresco dining and a 30-knot top hop. Asking price: $649,000. Courtesy Gilman Yachts

2013 Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht – Optimist – West Palm Beach, Florida

“Gilman Yachts has listed Optimist, a 2013 Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht, with an asking price of $649,000. The express-style cruiser has a two-stateroom, two head, layout that can sleep seven thanks to a convertible sofa in the lower salon that converts into a Pullman berth forming upper and lower bunks.

One of this yacht’s highlights is the helm-station experience. Yachting has previously reported how well Riviera designed the double-leather-seat helm space on the 5000 Sport Yacht, including its sightlines: “Two forward-facing windows have uncluttered views and are served by decently sized wipers. Add the long side windows and the open after bulkhead, and you have a near-flawless, 360-degree line of sight.” Additionally, there is a retractable sunroof in case the skipper wants to bring breezes and more natural light into the salon. The helm is also set up with a Garmin electronics suite, including multifunction GPS, displays, radar, autopilot and more. There is also joystick driving and a Skyhook vessel-positioning system.”

Riva Dolceriva Epica
The Dolceriva Epica has a 40-knot top hop and accommodations to sleep four. Courtesy Allied Marine

2021 Riva Dolceriva – Epica – Huntington, New York

The 48-foot Riva Dolceriva Epica, listed with Allied Marine, is for sale and is asking $1.9 million. The 2021 build has only 175 hours on its Volvo Penta diesels, has a 40-knot top hop and has two staterooms for cruising with family and friends.

The outside spaces aboard this yacht include two sun pads that flank the teak-sole cockpit. Immediately forward and to port is a four-person L-shaped settee and a table that folds out to create a larger dining space with the three-person bench sofa to starboard. The helm is forward and to starboard.”

Tiara Yachts EX 54 Expands Series https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/new-yachts-tiara-ex-54/ Mon, 13 May 2024 19:00:11 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=64047 The Volvo Penta IPS-powered Tiara Yachts EX 54 adds a second model to the builder's line, which also includes a 60-footer.

The Tiara Yachts EX 54 adds a second model to the builder’s EX series, which started with the flagship EX 60. The trademark of this series is each yacht’s flexibility, which is especially evident in the cockpit.

For entertainment-centric owners, the EX 54 has a lounge-module option with solid-surface countertops, a drawer-style refrigerator and an optional ice maker.

For angling aficionados, there is an adventure module that includes a sink with a cutting board, an optional livewell, five rod holders at the transom, an insulated cooler tub, tackle stowage with dividers, and an electric grill to cook the catch of the day.

There is also a glass patio module. In this setup, there is a laminated glass bulkhead, a high-gloss teak countertop, and adjustable ottomans that can lock into place. The ottomans are covered in Ultraleather, with four color options: Whitewater Beige, Lighthouse White, Coast Dolphin Gray and Sea Cliff Gray.

Multiple cockpit modules—ranging from entertaining to angling—create myriad ways to enjoy the water. Courtesy Tiara Yachts

In all versions, the EX 54 has three staterooms, accommodating six guests for extended cruising. The owners’ stateroom is amidships, spans the yacht’s full 15-foot-11-inch beam, and has a queen pedestal berth and an en suite head with a separate shower stall. The room also has ocean views via hullside windows flanking the space. Additional amenities include a 50-inch smart HDTV, 18,000-Btu Webasto air conditioning, a settee to starboard (a great place to read a book on the hook), a cedar-lined hanging locker and a backlit mirror.

Like the owners’ stateroom, the forepeak VIP has a queen berth. There are hullside windows and a skylight, and a 32-inch HDTV. The VIP has access to a head that also serves as the day head. A third stateroom is abaft and to starboard of the VIP with bunk berths for kids.

The main- deck interior has an L-shaped galley aft and to starboard with direct access to the cockpit. Across is a dining table that, at first glance, looks like an L-shaped layout. However, the companion helm seat to port slides forward to create a U-shaped scenario, increasing seating for another guest or two.

The helm is forward and to starboard, with two 22-inch Garmin GPSMap 8622 displays (a third is optional), a Stidd helm seat, and side-deck access via a sliding pilothouse door.

Power is a pair of Volvo Penta IPS950 diesels.

Clever Design

There are foldout terraces to port and starboard, increasing usable cockpit space. They have Herculan synthetic teak soles, and each side has an integrated boarding door.

Galley amenities include a stainless-steel sink, a recessed three-burner electric cooktop, a microwave and convection oven and Dual Isotherm refrigerator and freezer drawer units.

The 70-inch hydraulic swim platform below doubles as the tender stowage thanks to custom flush-mounted chalks.

The forepeak VIP has a centerline scissor-style queen berth that converts into two single berths, cedar-lined hanging locker and en suite head. The VIP head also acts as the day head. The final guest stateroom has two singles as well as access to VIP head via the lower atrium.

Serving meals to the guests in the cockpit or the salon is made easy with the Tiara 53 Coupe’s aft galley layout. The galley is equipped with a three-burner electric cooktop, countertops to port and starboard, double stainless-steel undermount sinks with covers, a microwave oven, drawers and stowage lockers to provision for a cruise, four Isotherm 110V refrigerator and freezer drawers and a beverage cooler.

The salon is forward and one step up from the galley, beckoning guests to sit for casual conversation and enjoy the L-shaped sofa, lounge chair and fixed table to port. A love seat is to starboard, abaft the two-seat helm station, completing the salon’s seating arrangement. If the 360 degrees of natural sunlight from the salon’s windows isn’t enough, the captain can dial it up to 10 with the retractable sunroof.

When it comes to exterior spaces on board Again, the cockpit has two rear-facing seats flanking the sliding glass doors along with a folding table and bench seat aft against the transom. Pull up loose chairs for alfresco dining. Forward, side decks with high rails lead to the foredeck, which has a recessed sun pad with cup holders, a great spot for catching some sun before dinner ashore.

Power on Again comes from twin 750 hp Volvo Penta IPS950 diesels, giving this Tiara 53 Coupe a reported 34-knot top hop. It’s worth noting the engines only have 410 hours on them. This yacht also has joystick driving for close-quarters maneuvering.

When it comes to Tiara Yachts, the talk around the dock is that its boats are “overbuilt,” meaning they are constructed to handle harsh conditions. This compliment is born out of the company’s Great Lakes heritage, where the tighter wave periods and unpredictable weather patterns can make things uncomfortable in a hurry. The Tiara 48 LE, the flagship of the builder’s outboard-powered sport lineup, lives up to that rugged reputation while leveling up the luxury amenities.

The cockpit is the most noteworthy area on the boat, with several great features for socializing. Start with the power-actuated rotating lounge module. With the push of a button, it will rotate a full 180 degrees. Its tracking system stops and locks it in place at any angle that’s desired. Facing forward, it creates a great conversation pit with the aft-facing lounges under the hardtop. Fold out the wings on the high-gloss teak table, and fire up the electric grill. Facing aft, the rotating lounge provides a great view off the transom while at anchor. Turned to port, it offers seating to enjoy the fold-out terrace, which provides water access away from the outboards while at rest. The integrated swim ladder makes for easy reboarding.

Let the socialization continue in the salon, which is bathed in sunlight, thanks to 360-degree windows. Retract the sunroof to create a more open feel. The glass door to the salon slides open, and the window to starboard electrically retracts into the bulkhead to create an open flow with the cockpit. Everything adds up for a boat that’s primed for entertainment.

The captain has a double-wide helm seat with built-in teak toe kicks. The Garmin Marine Navigation System displays are easy to read at the dash and are bolstered by companion multifunction displays in the settee to port, so someone can take on navigator duties without crowding the captain.

With regard to design, the deep-V sport hull that tapers to 21 degrees of deadrise at the transom handles rough water outside the inlet with aplomb. Adding the optional Seakeeper 6 gyrostabilizer takes the boat’s already excellent seakeeping to the next level.

Natural Light

Belowdecks, the master and guest staterooms are brightly lit and feel bigger than they should, thanks to the hullside windows. The master has an en suite head with a separate stand-up shower that has a built-in bench. The guest head also has a separate shower with a bench. In a nod to modern technology, Tiara built in wireless phone chargers on either side of the master berth.

Sporty Performance

Tiara powers the 48 LE with triple 600 hp Mercury V-12 Verado outboards. With six people aboard and 442 gallons of fuel, plus 50 gallons of water, the 48 LE hit 46.5 knots at wide-open throttle (6,450 rpm). It climbed onto plane in 7.4 seconds with minimal bow rise, so the captain never loses sight of the water during acceleration. The Mercury joystick system is integrated with a bow thruster to make docking and close-quarters handling far easier.

Closer Look

The starboard-side boarding area in the cockpit is a prime example of the steps (literally) that Tiara takes to enhance comfort and safety. Along with the boarding door built into the starboard gunwale, there’s a built-in step-down into the cockpit, with a handhold to ensure easy transfer from the dock to the boat.

Following on the heels of its successful 60 EX flagship launch, Michigan-based yacht builder Tiara Yachts is expanding the EX yacht series with the EX 54, slated to debut at the Miami International Boat Show in February.

One of the hallmarks of the series is its flexibility for owners to dial in how they want to live their on-the-water lifestyle.

Outside, Tiara offers a lounge module with U-shaped seating, an outdoor galley, solid-surface countertops, a drawer-style refrigerator and optional ice maker for owners’ who like to entertain.

The EX 54’s adventure module turns this area into a fishing-focused space with a sink with a cutting board, an optional livewell, five rod holders at the transom, an insulated cooler tub, tackle stowage with dividers and even an electric grill to cook the catch of the day.

There is also a glass patio module, which includes a laminated-glass bulkhead with a high-gloss teak countertop and adjustable ottomans that can be locked in place. They are made with Ultraleather and come with four color options: whitewater beige, lighthouse white, coast dolphin grey and sea cliff grey. There is also aft-facing seating with a table and a portable grill. The table and grill can be stowed when not in use. Additionally, this module has options for a bike rack and kayak stowage.

In any layout, there are three staterooms accommodating six guests with two heads. The owners’ stateroom is full-beam and amidships with a queen pedestal berth and en suite head. The space has ocean views via hull-side windows. Other room amenities include 18,000-Btu Webasto air conditioning, a 50-inch Smart HDTV TV, cedar-lined hanging locker, full-length backlit mirror, a settee and stowage.

The VIP stateroom has a queen berth with skylight as well as a 32-inch Smart HDTV. This space also has hull-side windows to take in water views. The third guest stateroom has bunk berths for the kids.

Supporting this family-friendly cruising craft is a fiberglass hull with closed-cell foam in the hull bottom and sides for strength without added weight. The deck is also built with closed-cell foam. A full fiberglass grid system set into the hull bottom adds rigidity and additional strength.

Other notable options for the Tiara Yachts EX 54 are a hydraulic swim platform, a Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizer, a second joystick in the cockpit deck wing, an extra Garmin 22-inch display, FLIR night vision, a washer/driver and a cockpit TV, to name a few.

When Tiara Yachts created a new flagship for its fleet, it went big: The Tiara EX 60 is a full 10 feet longer than any other Tiara. More importantly, this 60-footer maintains the high level of construction, fit and finish and performance expected from the Michigan builder.

The broad strokes here are a three-stateroom yacht with a full-beam master and surprising performance—for moving 26 tons—from the twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1350 diesels linked by jackshafts to IPS pod drives, giving a reported hammer-down speed of about 40 knots and a fuel-sipping 52-gallon-per-hour cruise at about 25 knots.

This is also a yacht for connecting with the water, with a single-deck living space stretching from the hydraulic swim platform all the way to the windshield. The cockpit, partially shaded by the hardtop overhang, and partially by an extendable awning, is where buyers can add modules that can be mixed and matched. The alfresco seating module has back-to-back couches with a folding table, while the aft lounge module adds another two-way settee aft. Other choices include an aft grill, a fridge and a sink, while the breakfast-bar version includes an aft-facing counter with three ottoman seats. Anglers can select packages including rod holders and bait-prep stations. Whatever the combinations, a pair of settees are tucked into the forward corners, protected from the sun and wind.

Also, in all configurations, the transom platform lowers to become a beach or to launch an 11-foot Williams Sportjet 345 (on hidden chocks). Both sides of the cockpit butterfly outward to create water-level terraces that extend the beam to more than 20 feet.

The salon is as bright as the outdoors, with windows from overhead to settee level, an electric sunroof and sliding doors that open fully. A raised settee to port has two removable bar stools and faces the long galley with twin Isotherm fridges, a Kenyon induction two-burner cooktop and stowage space that more than makes up for the lack of hanging cabinetry, which would block views.

Just forward, the skipper has a double-wide Stidd helm seat with a joystick on the armrest. It’s abaft a black dash with twin 22-inch Garmin monitors and a row of clearly marked buttons for systems. The sliding door here lets the skipper step onto the side deck to help with lines or get a better view when docking, since the throttle and thruster controls are next to the door. Just opposite the helm is a double companion seat. The optional Garmin multifunction display can be switched from navigation to ship’s systems via the touchscreen. For portside maneuvering, the skipper has engine and thruster controls tucked into a side locker of the cockpit.

While the salon and cockpit are about fun, the lower-level accommodations whisper serenity. The full-beam master is amidships for minimal motion and provides walkaround space on each side of the queen-size berth. The starboard nightstand has a slide-out workstation. There’s also a love seat, a flip-up vanity, a built-in bureau, a full-height hanging locker, and a washer and dryer. The en suite head has a full-stall shower. Like the VIP head that doubles as a day head, the master’s head has vessel sinks and Euro-style faucets.

The VIP stateroom is forward with an island queen berth (mostly walk-around). There’s direct access to the head, which has a stall shower. Between the two staterooms is a guest space with slide-together twin berths. Tiara created carved-wood headboards that not only warm the staterooms but also create an inviting textured effect. The decor, including the headboards, was orchestrated by Mary Flores Interiors of Seattle, and it includes everything from throw pillows to bed coverlets.

The systems, from diesel mains to jackshafts to Volvo Penta’s IPS pods, take up half the boat under the deck, and I was surprised that access was not just for the skinny. A diamond-plate walkway between the two Volvo Penta D13s provided good serviceability, and the EX 60 I got aboard was fitted with a Seakeeper 9, a Volvo Interceptor trim system and a 13.5 kW Onan genset. The bilge was fully gelcoated for easy cleaning, and sound- and vibration-deadening material was everywhere, resulting in just 72 decibels in the salon while the boat was running flat-out. That’s about conversation level, and most of the noise that registered was bow wave and wake astern.

Tiara Yachts EX 60

The EX 60 also has a sunning, sitting and dining area on the bow. Reaching it is safer and easier with the faux-teak decking from Teakdecking Systems. This material is easy to maintain and provides a nonslip surface. Tiara uses it on all decks as well as in the salon interior. Surrounding the deck are impeccably welded rails that are “bling,” along with deck cleats and chocks. The Lewmar anchor windlass is hidden in a locker with stowage for fenders and dock lines, and the anchor hawse is through the stem with a protective stainless-steel plate.

As the new flagship of the Tiara Yachts fleet, the EX 60 carries forward the traditions of impressive construction, thoughtful design features and surprising performance. And it’s a lot of fun too.

Origin Story

Tiara Yachts traces its lineage to SlickCraft, the first company of Tiara founder Leon Slikkers. The company started building wooden runabouts in 1955 and fiberglass vessels by 1960. Leon, joined by sons David and Robert, launched Tiara Powerboats in 1976. In 2012, his youngest son Tom, took over as president and CEO. In 2021, after a 75-year career, Leon retired.

Meet the Fleet

In addition to the EX 60, Tiara has four Luxury Sport Series models, ranging from the 34LS to the 48LS. The Luxury Crossover Series has the 34LX, and the 43LE and 48LE are in the Luxury Express Series. Lastly, there is the three-model Coupe Series with the C39, C44 and C49.

Volvo Penta Interceptors

Part of the Volvo Penta Electronic Vessel Control system on the Tiara EX 60, the Interceptors are trim controls with vertical sliding blades. With the Active Ride feature, these blades diminish pitch and roll by up to 60 percent while keeping the boat more upright in sharp turns. The result is increased cruising comfort at all speeds and better fuel efficiency.

We mariners personify yachts all the time, but it’s rare to give one a full-blown psychiatric evaluation. If you did so with the Tiara Sport 43 LE, however, you’d quickly nail down split personalities as the diagnosis.

Sitting at anchor or tied to the dock, the 43 LE is mellow, relaxed and willing to do just about anything to make you comfortable and happy. But the boat changes when you crank the standard stereo system’s Fusion head unit, JL Audio digital amplification, eight speakers and two subwoofers. Then the 43 LE turns into a party platform. And if you unleash the 1,350 horses strapped to the transom, there’s yet another completely different character: a determined athlete.

When the 43 LE is in cheerful host mode, the cockpit will be the center of activity. Tiara designed this part of the boat to serve equally well in multiple scenarios, equipping it to change form in two significant ways.

Tiara Sport 43 LE
The Tiara Sport 43 LE’s forepeak is set up with a step-up queen berth perfect for a couple. Courtesy Tiara Sport

The first way the cockpit adapts is with the entertainment unit, which has two loungers with flip-up footrests on one side and an integrated grill and stowage compartment on the other side. I hesitate to call either side the front or the back because the entire unit spins 360 degrees. You can position it so the loungers face aft for watching sunsets over the bay, or spin it 180 degrees so it’s facing forward for cruising, or spin it to 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock with the loungers facing the port or starboard seating aft on the bridge deck for socializing.

The second way the cockpit adjusts its attitude is via what Tiara calls the portside “terrace.” Ready to drop the hook and enjoy some party time at anchor? Press a button, and this side of the cockpit lowers to water level. Considered in total with the platforms on each side of the outboards, and with the lounger facing aft, the space as a whole feels more like a mega-yacht beach club than an expanded swim platform.

And note that when I ran the boat, I saw zero water intrusion at the hullside seam, something I can’t say about every boat I’ve been on with expansion elements.

Tiara Sport 43 LE
This yacht’s cockpit seating spins to face aft when it’s time for watersports fun. Courtesy Tiara Sport

Transitioning from the cockpit to the bridge deck, there’s a feature that allows this part of the boat to change its character too. There’s no after bulkhead or the usual roll-up canvas, snaps and straps to fumble with for climate control. Rather, just grab the stainless-steel handles to each side and pull. Clear canvas doors slide out of the hardtop’s after supports and latch together in the center. Release the catch, and the spring-loaded system rolls those canvas doors right back up inside.

In one fell swoop, Tiara has done away with one of the most aggravating aspects of having a boat with a removable enclosure. Added bonus: Because the canvas runs in tracks at the top and bottom, there aren’t any gaps, so the setup also reduces engine noise much better than any snapped-on enclosure could.

Ready to switch from relaxed mode to a hard-charging personality? When throttled up, the triple Mercury Racing 450R outboards flex some serious muscle. (Triple Yamaha 425 hp XTOs are also available.) The Tiara 43 LE I was aboard ripped across the Chesapeake Bay at 51.1 knots with five people and a two-thirds load of fuel in the amidships tank (located there to minimize the fuel level’s effect on trim). The top speed of 51 knots made me think that if the boat were run light, it could touch that magical mile-per-minute mark. Tiara representative Josh Emmick said he had achieved precisely that mark a few days earlier.

Tiara Sport 43 LE
Foredeck sun pads offer a quiet respite whether on the hook or at the dock. Courtesy Tiara Sport

Swing the wheel hard over at cruise speed or while going full tilt, and the yacht’s 21-degree deep-V hull digs in and carves a turn half as wide as virtually any boat this size rigged with inboards and rudders. Dockside handling was above par with the joystick control; in fact, when we returned to a cramped and crowded marina to parallel park with maybe 3 or 4 feet of clearance fore and aft, docking was simply a matter of lining up next to the opening and then nudging the joystick sideways.

Chances are you’ve thought about the yachts you’ve owned through the years as having personalities of their own. The Tiara Sport 43 LE is clearly more than a single somebody, and owners can share the ride in the company of whichever personality they please—whenever they choose.
