How do you store compressed liquid hydrogen on a superyacht at the equivalent of minus-423 degrees Fahrenheit?

This was the toughest question Dutch builder Feadship faced as it set out to create Project 821, the world’s first hydrogen-cell superyacht. “The aim has been to develop a new, clean technology not just for this project, but for the world,” says Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Feadship director and CEO at Royal Van Lent Shipyard.

Feadship Project 821
The owner’s deck above the bridge has two bedrooms, a gym, a pantry, two offices (each with a fireplace) and a living room. Courtesy Feadship

Hydrogen fuel cells offer great promise for combustion-free cruising, with only electricity and water as their byproducts. But unlike with vehicles and spacecraft, the technology is new to recreational yachts. Weight isn’t the problem because hydrogen is light, but safely storing it on a vessel requires a double-walled cryogenic tank in a dedicated room. According to Feadship, it takes eight to 10 times more space to store hydrogen than the energy equivalent in diesel fuel.

Project 821’s size, at 390 feet long, made it a good candidate to test the technology. The tank on board holds about 4 tons of hydrogen, with the system able to provide a week’s worth of silent operation at anchor, or navigating at 10 knots while leaving harbors or cruising in protected marine zones.

All of that was achieved in addition to the kind of luxury that Feadship clients demand. The yacht’s design is by RWD, with owner representation by Edmiston. It has the most hull openings of any Feadship to date, with 14 balconies. Guest amenities include an elevator and a library.

“We have now shown that cryogenic storage of liquefied hydrogen in the interior of a superyacht is a viable solution,” Verkuyl says. “Future innovations on fuel cells and onboard reforming of methanol to hydrogen are on the near horizon.”

New Horizons

There were no regulations for hydrogen storage and fuel-cell systems on a superyacht, so Feadship, along with Edmiston and Lloyd’s Register, developed appropriately scaled equipment, protocols and safety regulations as part of the build.

Record-Setter

Project 821 is also the largest motoryacht ever launched in the Netherlands. It is about the same length as Feadship’s Launchpad, but with 30 percent more volume.

“Aggressive, sleek and fast, the Pershing 90, like the missile it’s named after, is certainly striking,” Yachting previously wrote. “With its lean, aerodynamic profile, dramatic metallic-silver looks and thoroughbred performance, the 90-footer is not one to miss its target.”

For owners in the market for this super-sized cruiser, HMY Yachts has a 2009 Pershing 90 Express listed for $2.75 million. The 90-foot cruiser has the European-version four-stateroom layout and an entertainment-only sport bridge.

HMY Yachts says Miura is a must see, “Besides its stunning profile and sleek looks, the 2009 Pershing 90 Express Miura is a very agile and great running yacht.”

Exterior entertainment spaces onboard Miura are not in short supply. The foredeck, for instance, has a U-shaped dinette with a folding table abaft an island sun pad. The dinette has a sun shade that can fold out if guests desire a little shade. The cockpit space has a transom sun pad that doubles as a bench seat for the aft deck dining space. Forward, an aft-facing bench seat offers additional lounge seating.

Blink and you might miss that Miura has a low-profile flybridge. The open deck space is currently used as a third sunning area with loose lounge chairs and sun pads.

The salon has a bright and vibrant vibe despite not having oversized windows, achieving the ambiance by having lighter tones on the wood furniture, smartly-placed overhead interior lighting, white walls, a white ceiling, a light blue settee and a high-gloss dark wood floor to contrast and anchor the space. The salon has a conventional arrangement with lounge seating aft and a formal dining space, forward, amidships.

Miura has a galley-down layout which is located in the crew area, a feature that leaves a larger entertainment footprint on the main deck and an unencumbered living area forward, belowdecks. The galley has all the necessary meal-prep appliances, including:

  • Miele side by side SS refrigerator/freezer
  • GE Microwave oven
  • Bosch dishwasher
  • Bosch four burner cooktop
  • Bosch oven
  • Dual side by side SS sinks

When a fun day on the water is over and the last drinks have been drunk, owners and their guests can head belowdecks to four well-appointed staterooms. In the master stateroom owners will enjoy amenities like the island king berth, the desk space and an en suite head. The VIP has an offset queen berth, a 32-inch flat-screen TV and an en suite head. The final two guest cabins both have twin berths.

Power on this 90-footer is provided by twin 2,400 hp MTU 16V2000 diesels which give it an eye-watering 41-knot top hop. It’s worth noting the engines currently have 1,480 hours on them.

Some other notable features on board Miura include:

  • Twin Kohler 20 kW generators
  • Simrad dual 20-inch screens
  • Simrad Radar with dome

Tranquility Base is a well-maintained 2006 Ocean Alexander 58 that has been kept inside a custom-built boat house, keeping it free from constant exposure to the elements. This owner-operator motoryacht is listed with Alexander Marine USA for $1.229 million.

“The 58 pilothouse was designed by the iconic Ed Monk Jr., who has been producing eye-pleasing, classic, seakindly pilothouse yachts for Ocean Alexander for almost three decades. Indeed, there are now more than 1,000 Ocean Alexanders cruising around the world; the current lineup goes from 42 to 98 feet. The new 58 pilothouse is a traditional three-stateroom, two-head design with lots of teak and luxury appointments that appeal to buyers who are used to the best, whether in their homes or their yachts, and who also, as Johnny says, want the independence of running the boat themselves. (With three staterooms, of course, there’s room for a crew, but the boat is really designed for the owner-operators of the world),” Yachting previously reported.

Powered by twin 700 hp Caterpillar C-12 diesel engines, Tranquility Base can hit 20 knots. But this yacht is not about speed, it’s about cruising in comfort. Dial it back to around 13 knots for a long-range cruise speed.

The 58’s salon has high-gloss Sakura wood with teak and Burl wood trim. Stepping inside the salon via a stainless-steel framed glass door from the cockpit, the custom exotic woodwork glows in the natural light, creating a warm, relaxing sensation. Recline in a leather loveseat to port or kick back on the sofa to starboard.

The galley is forward and to starboard, just abaft the helm on centerline. The U-shaped galley has plenty of counter space for food prep, and it’s equipped with an electric cooktop, oven and microwave. Stow your cold goods in the oversized refrigerator/freezer and other galley accessories in an array of cabinets. Forward and to port is a dinette, allowing guests to have their meals with a view while keeping the skipper company.

Octoport’s Carbon-Fiber Yacht Furniture Elevates Life Onboard https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/gear/octoport-furniture-balancing-act/ Thu, 19 Sep 2024 19:00:08 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=66202 These lightweight, customizable deck furniture designs come in shapes and styles that are unusual to see aboard superyachts.

Arun Maheswaran is excited. This past September, he displayed his Octoport outdoor yacht furniture for the first time at the Monaco Yacht Show, advancing the dream he’s been working to achieve since he started the company in 2017. From his showroom near the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen, Germany, he brought chairs like the one above, which is part of his new Oyoso collection. He also displayed folding chairs that can be taken to the beach, and bar stools from his bespoke collection—all of it lightweight and in styles and colors possible to create because of Octoport’s carbon-fiber construction.

“The feedback was really, really good,” he says. “A lot of owners and owners’ reps, also designers, they said it was the first time they were seeing furniture like that.”

Octoport Oyoso dining chair
The Oyoso dining chair (starting around $7,000) is based on Japanese and 1970s influences with a floating design. Courtesy Octoport

The way the seat appears to float above the base is a signature element of his designs. Each piece is painted similar to the way a carbon-fiber yacht hull is painted, with hundreds of available colors (as well as custom ones). “This kind of design will not work with teak or steel,” he says. “It would be really heavy, or there would be joint creaks after some years.”

This version of the Oyoso dining chair is intended for yacht owners who want a more rounded look on board. Courtesy Octoport

All the crew needs to do is clean the furniture the same way they clean a carbon-fiber hull, and it should last for 10 to 20 years, he says. The carbon-fiber material helps to keep the yacht’s weight down, and allows styles like the folding chairs to be more compact for stowing and transporting in a tender that’s headed off to the beach.

This version has the same type of floating design, but with a shape better suited for yachts with squared-off styling. Courtesy Octoport

Yacht owners are starting to place large orders, Maheswaran says, with one refit happening in Greece that will include a substantial amount of Octoport furniture on board. An American owner bought several of the folding chairs at the Monaco show, at a price point of at least $5,400 apiece.

The Oyoso lounge chair can be used as shown or with the pieces together as a sun lounger. Courtesy Octoport

Pricing is made to order, like the furniture itself, with fabric and color selections affecting the final tally. Quantity also matters, he says: “We can go cheaper if the owner wants 20 of these chairs.”

Maheswaran adds that he is delighted to see yacht owners and designers opening their minds to the possibilities: “I want to bring this freshness to the industry.”

Since 1994, there have been 65 Westport 112 hulls launched. The 2002 Westport 112 Raised Pilothouse called Integrity is currently listed with Luke Brown Yachts for $4.295 million. This particular Westport 112 was purchased by its current owner in 2006 and has since cruised in the Mediterranean and around New Zealand.
“One will rarely find a yacht of this vintage that has been as consistently well cared for as Integrity,” Luke Brown Yachts says. “She has always had a full-time captain and/or engineer aboard and, when in use, additional crew.”

The flybridge Jacuzzi will be a go-to spot anytime of the day and with a bar a few steps away, happy hour might start early. Courtesy Luke Brown Yachts

Although Integrity is not available for new ownership until returning to Spain in fall 2024, arrangements can be made to inspect it and offers can be submitted. It’s worth noting if Integrity is not sold by fall, the yacht will be shipped to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with an early-December estimated time of arrival.

Stepping into the salon, guests will notice the natural light pouring in from the waist-to-ceiling windows lining the space. Lounge seating is aft to starboard with a low-top bar directly to port. Formal dining is amidships. A circular dining table offers seating for eight. A chandelier above accentuates the dining area.

Past the forward bulkhead is the main deck country galley. Along with the forward dinette and the island bar, the galley is equipped with an array of meal-prep appliances, including:

  • Liebherr refrigerator/freezer
  • Thermador steam oven

The cockpit has a U-shaped dinette aft which has room for eight people to enjoy shaded alfresco dining. Wide side decks lead to and from the foredeck which does have a built-in bench seat forward in case guests want to enjoy cocktails at sunset.

The flybridge has multiple entertainment areas guests can enjoy. The after section is a blank canvas, perfect for chaise lounge chairs to catch some sun. Amidships, a Jacuzzi sits on the centerline with a settee forward to starboard and a bar to port. If the sun gets too harsh a Bimini top can shade the forward section of the flybridge.

After a fun day on the water ends, owners and their guests can head belowdecks to one of four en suite staterooms. Amidships, the full-beam master stateroom has a centerline king berth, a cedar-lined wardrobe, a variety of stowage, an entertainment system and four portholes, which help fill the space with natural light. Forward, the VIP stateroom has a centerline queen berth, a walk-in cedar-lined wardrobe and entertainment system. Of the two remaining guest cabins, one has a queen berth and one has twin single berths. The crew quarters are abaft the engine room with a double-berth captain’s cabin and a second cabin that has three single berths.

The Italian builder Austin Parker has launched a range of catamarans called Unica, along with a range of navettas called Iconica.

Each collection will have three models. For the Unica collection, there will be a 58, 68 and 78. In the Iconica collection, there will be a 77, 88 and 100.

At the recent Cannes Yachting Festival in France, the company unveiled the design for the Iconica 100, and had the Unica 58 in the water (its design was unveiled for the public last year). The company noted an A-shaped line on the hardtop support for all its boats as a signature feature going forward.

The introduction of the Unica and Iconica ranges follows the 2023 acquisition of Austin Parker by Baris Nalcaci, a Turkish entrepreneur active in various industrial sectors, including the production of composite products for the aeronautical sector. One of his goals is to help Austin Parker “make a significant leap in quality,” according to the company.

Designed in collaboration with Pininfarina and De Simoni Yacht Design, the Iconica range integrates sustainable materials and solar panels, minimizing ecological impact. Courtesy Austin Parker

On the Unica series, there’s a full-beam master stateroom and large windows, with the idea of onboard comfort as well as a blending of the indoors and outdoors. The Iconica series also has large windows, as well as a two-level entrance aft and an owner’s stateroom with a private terrace.

Solar panels and sustainable materials are incorporated to reduce the yachts’ ecological footprints.

Austin Parker worked with Pininfarina and De Simoni Yacht Design on the concepts.

“We focused on identifying and addressing the missing features in the current market, ensuring our new products stand out by providing unmatched comfort and performance,” Daniele Mazzon, head of nautical design at Pininfarina, stated in a press release. “Our latest product range is designed to offer all the comforts of a private villa, without sacrificing the essential seakeeping capabilities that our customers expect.”

The Unica series includes three models: the 58, 68 and 78. The yachts have a full-beam master stateroom, expansive windows designed to enhance natural light and a signature A-shaped hardtop that provides structural integrity while enhancing the yachts’ lines. Courtesy Austin Parker

What does designer Fulvio De Simoni say about the new models from Austin Parker? “Designing a new line of boats for a shipyard is a great responsibility, and I thank [shipyard owner Baris] Nalcaci for believing so strongly in our work. We need to anticipate trends, imagine new ways to use onboard spaces, and define a distinctive style that identifies the shipyard. Collaborating and sharing ideas with such an important partner has certainly been stimulating, and I believe that together we are creating projects of great quality.”

One key highlight of the fall boat show season each year is the introduction of new boats and products—we all clamor for the new technology and fawn over the new offerings in sleek fiberglass, glowing wood or nowadays, high-tech carbon fiber.

And so, under perfectly sunny fall Rhode Island skies, the 2024 Newport International Boat Show announced its winners of the annual Newport for New Products awards. An annual industry highlight, NFNP entries were open to domestic and foreign products that were nationally launched after April 1, 2024, and made their boat show debut at Newport. Show attendees selected the People’s Choice Award winner, while all other category winners were selected by a team of industry experts based on innovation, value to the consumer, safety and aesthetics. On the opening day of the show, those experts (including yours truly) spent a full day on the docks checking out all the latest. This year saw the debut of 20 new powerboat entries with another nine in the sail category, as well as 18 products ranging from sailboat winches to waterproof personal gear to safety and more. Products and vessels were checked and cross-checked, and the deliberations at the end of the day could have filled a dozen boating magazines as we weighed those categories of innovation, value, safety and aesthetics.

Bringing home the double win as Best New Large Powerboat and Overall Powerboat Winner was the Full Keel Marine NorthCoast 415HT. This quad-outboard-powered beast of a vessel is offered in cruising and fishing configurations, but what stood out to the judges was simply the beauty, size and brawn of this well-built boat. It also offers excellent value as well.

The Newport for New Products also presented awards to the following manufacturers:

  • Best New Boating Product – Seldén Mast 3-Speed Electric/Manual Winches
    • Honorable Mention: Raymarine Smart Wind Sensors and Ugo Messenger
  • Best New Sailboat – Carbon Ocean Yachts SDK 49
  • Best New Small Powerboat – Solace Boats 28HCS
  • Green Product Award – Elco Motor
  • Green Boat Award – HYFOIL 32, Hyfoil Marine
  • Accessible Product Award – Digital Yacht America Man Overboard Alert
  • People’s Choice Award – Kufner 54’ Exclusive, Kufner Yachts USA

There’s something about a beautifully executed, modern-classic express cruiser that makes the heart swoon.

Maybe it’s the way the house shape reminds us of the hardiest lobster boats, with all the go-to-sea romance that lifestyle embodies along the coast of Maine. Or maybe it’s the sweep in the sheerline with the proud bow that practically begs to let loose from the dock and head out for a long weekend of exploration off the coast. Hull-paint colors on modern classics are downright soothing. It’s as if a yacht designer put pen to paper and created a vision for inducing a sense of calm.

But then there’s also the good kind of heart pounding that a true modern classic also inspires. Take all of that sensuous style, then add a pair or a trio of 600 hp Mercury V-12 outboards along with a proven performance hull shape, and the boat has everything we need to feel the thrill of tearing across the open water at speeds not seen in this segment. It’s total control and absolute exhilaration, for as little or as long a time as we desire.

These are just some of the qualities embodied in the all-new ECLIPSE 505 and ECLIPSE 605, now for sale through HMY Yachts. The first ECLIPSE 505 is expected to arrive in the United States this fall, with its premiere planned for the 2024 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida. The first ECLIPSE 605 is expected to premiere at the 2025 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show.

Both the ECLIPSE 505 and the ECLIPSE 605 are built on the patented Stepped Vee Ventilated Tunnel hull by Sarasota, Florida-based designer Michael Peters. He’s a designer who cites legendary V-hull designer C. Raymond Hunt among his major influences, and who has helped to shape some of the best-performing powerboats of the past few decades.

In a nutshell, Peters’ SVVT hull design reduces the wetted surface, meaning the boat has less drag. In turn, this allows for quicker acceleration, faster speeds, better fuel economy and more. Both the ECLIPSE 505 and 605 can be ordered with the upgraded Shadow Performance Package, which consists of not just exclusive interior appointments, but also more features and an additional Mercury 600 hp engine. This additional power mated to the SVVT hull design will enable faster speeds with reliable handling and allow these express cruisers to stand out in their class.

The ECLIPSE 505 and 605 are built in South Africa by Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing, the same yard that turns out the Two Oceans Power Catamarans in the HMY Yachts stable of offerings. Dave Jirikovic, brand manager of both lines for HMY Yachts, says the plan is to build about 20 of the ECLIPSE 505 and 15 ECLIPSE 605 boats each year, focusing on high-end finishes and components inside and out—as well as on the type of upscale, concierge-level service that owners in this quality range expect.

“The ECLIPSE 505 and 605 are built for the most discerning yachtsmen,” Jirikovic says. “In July of 2022, HMY bought the former Whiticar Boatworks fully functional yard—now called HMY Willoughby Creek—in Stuart, Florida, to be the dedicated service and delivery center for the ECLIPSE owner. Renovations commenced immediately in preparation for the future arrival of ECLIPSE 505s and 605s. Our goal is to create a totally different experience for the customer—from on-site factory-certified Mercury 600 V-12 technicians, to delivery of your new ECLIPSE being out of the elements and under brand-new covered dockage. We are going the extra mile to ensure ECLIPSE customers receive a next-level experience.”

The ECLIPSE 505 is a two-stateroom, two-head design, while the ECLIPSE 605 has a three-stateroom, three-head layout. The boats are ideal for long weekends or weeklong getaways with family and friends. They have American components for ease of service anywhere, and they’re built with features that allow in fresh air and natural light to enhance the cruising experience, such as a retractable moonroof and an opening portside balcony in the cockpit.

Other things to look for in the ECLIPSE models, Jirikovic says, are innovative design elements that make boating easier—the kinds of touches that experienced yachtsmen appreciate. As just one example, the aft door leading from the main-deck salon into the cockpit can slide inboard or outboard on centerline to open, instead of requiring a battle of wills on days when there’s wind to contend with in a harbor.

“We have eliminated pinch points like those created by bi-fold doors,” he says. “Just open the center of the door on a bad day to go in and out of the boat without issue.”

Another advancement is the boarding door to starboard, which, unlike on other boats, doesn’t hinge in or out at all. It’s designed to make life easier for boaters whose hands are full and, well, to look darn cool at any dock as it disappears completely out of view and out of the way.

“It retracts into the cockpit sole,” Jirikovic says. “It’s unlike anything anyone has seen on the docks.”

Interiors on the ECLIPSE 505 and 605 are by Mark Tucker’s renowned team at Design Unlimited in the United Kingdom. He has more than 30 years of experience in the business, with the company’s work including not just higher-end production brands like the ECLIPSE, but also custom superyachts for top yards.

All of that experience will combine with the sales and service power of HMY Yachts, which is the exclusive worldwide dealer for all ECLIPSE models. The partnership means boaters will be able to get aboard these boats at major boat shows, touch and feel the fabrics and components to see the high quality of each model’s construction, and schedule sea trials with experienced captains and brokers who can answer any questions about handling, options and more.

“The worldwide debut will be powered by the HMY team, which has been delivering results since 1979,” says Steve Moynihan, founder and owner of HMY Yachts. “Our commitment to service our customers is unrivaled in the industry.”

Sea Ray’s L550 is a smartly-designed express cruiser that is owner-operator friendly, though it does have a crew cabin in case owners prefer to have a captain or mate for the weekend. Allied Marine has Flamingo, a 2018 Sea Ray L550, listed for $1.1 million.

“Whether cruising along the coastline or embarking on an extended journey, the L550 provides the right amenities,” says Allied Marine. “Every detail has been considered for you, your family, and your quest to enjoy a day on the water.”
